CRANE EXPERTISE

Since 1 January 2007, the revised crane regulations have been in force, setting out the requirements for the safe use of cranes. You can find more information at www.suva.ch under the section SUVA Pro, industry/specialist topics.

Die EKAS Directive 6511 stipulates daily and annual inspections:

Annual inspections by a specialist

We carry out the periodic, annual inspection of your crane professionally and at a competitive price, and if necessary we initiate the required steps to ensure the safe operation of your crane and compliance with legal regulations.

The daily checks can be carried out by the crane operator, but the annual inspections must be performed by a crane specialist!

3.1 Daily inspection by the crane operator

The employer is responsible for ensuring that the safety-relevant elements of the crane are checked for proper functionality by the crane operator on a daily basis usually at the start of work. The scope of this inspection is determined by the manufacturer's specifications. If defects are identified during the inspection, they must be repaired by a crane specialist before any lifting operations are carried out with the crane. If manufacturer specifications are unavailable, the Suva guidelines (Order No. 88180.d for mobile cranes or Order No. 88179.d for tower cranes) can serve as a standard for the inspection.

3.2 Annual inspection by a crane specialist

If the crane is in use, the entire crane structure must be subjected to an inspection (functional and visual check) by a crane specialist at least once a year. The scope of this inspection is determined by the manufacturer's specifications. If defects are identified during the inspection, they must be repaired by a crane specialist before any lifting operations are carried out with the crane.
